Villaraigosa was Chairman of UCLA MECHA, a group dedicated "to the self-determination of Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlan". He has never repudiated MECHA's goals.

He was a writer for Sin Fronteras, a vicious anti-American propaganda organ for Chicano separatists.

He was the only California politician who joined the 1996 March on Washington that demanded Amnesty for illegal aliens. He proudly stood on stage with The Brown Berets, the militant foot soldiers of the Chicano movement.

Villaraigosa joined then Mexican President Zedillo and then-Governor Gray Davis to kill Prop 187 because they were afraid it was constitutional. Yet in 1999, Villaraigosa said, "When the will of the people is ruled unconstitutional, then the will of the people is null and void" after keeping Prop 187 away from the Supreme Court.
