The Guardian version was written by the AP. The New York Post version was written by Reuven Fenton, Jessica Simeone and Bob Fredericks.

Here's what I wrote in Comments following The New York Post version of the story:

Typical (black) family reaction. They hate the police and many of them hate whitey which these cops are. The police have a job to do--preserve the peace. They also have a right to protect themselves. If you've ever been rushed by a goon with a knife, you know that it only takes seconds for that creep to plunge it into your body. Whether this scumbag was a fine bass player or a nice guy when he wasn't loaded with dope is irrelevant. You DON'T assault police or citizens with a weapon! In fact, you don't assault police or citizens at all and if you do, you have to be prepared to face the consequences! You allow them to take you into custody and you use your attorney to do what he/she can.

The family is criticizing the two police officers for not tasing the goon. Unfortunately, average cops on the beat in NYC are not allowed to carry such weapons, apparently, probably due to lawsuits by the ACLU, the NAACP et al.

God bless these two officers for trying to get the scumbag to drop the weapon! They did all they could do under the circumstances. Shooting a goon in the leg to slow him down isn't always going to stop drugged up scumbags bent on killing you!
