The problem with the GOP is you have mega-rich jokers like Steve Forbes pushing the flat tax and "free trade". Though Soetoro-Obama mentioned "tariffs" in last week's debate, he didn't push it and didn't say how high those tariffs might be, nor did he specify whether those tariffs would be slapped on goods made in China by U.S. companies and shipped back here. However, you won't find Romney slapping tariffs on China if he's elected President. He talks tough on China now that he's trying to keep Conservatives behind him prior to the Election.

The only way to lure companies back to the U.S. is to cut corporate gains taxes and eliminate state taxes as Texas did and then slap tariffs on ALL goods made in China both by Chinese and U.S. companies! And those tariffs will have to be substantial--like, 33% or more. Does anyone remember Smoot-Hawley? Activist Paul Streitz wrote an excellent piece on it which I posted here on March 14, 2010 titled "The Smoot-Hawley Lie".

This reasoning does not hold up to close inspection. Smoot-Hawley did not cause the Great Depression, nor did it extend it.

For a time, Americans will scream for cheap Chinese goods but that will pass as we begin to "buy American" again. Tariffs aren't the only thing that needs to be done. There has to be some government oversight of all returning businesses to make sure that they don't go back to hiring illegal aliens when they move their businesses back to the U.S.
