The Insanity Of Romney's 'Touchback' Amnesty Scheme (by Dave Levine)

The Insanity Of Romney's "Touchback" Amnesty Scheme

by Dave Levine

Romney surrogates John Sununu and Carlos Gutierrez have been pushing pieces of Romney's Grand Immigration Plan as they stump around the country for the Republican nominee. I'm assuming that Amnesty is going to be the big part of it, but these surrogates are only talking about increasing farmworkers/migrant illegals (as the H-2A program isn't working with so many of the farmworkers are absconding to the cities and suburbs for easier, higher-paying jobs) and increasing "well-educated foreign nationals" on the J-1, H-1B and Diversity Visa programs. They're staying away from discussing "the A word".

Romney says over and over in interviews and speeches that he wants to bring in "brilliant-minded" foreign nationals to take our higher-paying jobs as if we don't breed them or are devoid of "brilliant-minded" Americans here. When you think about it, it's really insulting to Americans. We aren't dumb! We know the truth behind this ruse--Romney's not looking for Einsteins! He wants to continue to flood the nation with poor, illiterate illegal aliens or legalize the millions of poor, illiterate illegal aliens already here so that big business can have access to easily-manipulated (foreign) workers. This keeps Chamber and BigAg money flowing into their coffers which keeps RINOs in power (RINOs control nearly all "red state" legislatures but do not control Conservative legislatures Alabama, Arizona and South Carolina, not surprisingly the three states with the toughest 1070 laws). RINOs are keeping Texas, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and other red states from passing 1070 and LAWA (mandatory E-verify) laws and it is 1070 and LAWA that cause illegal aliens to leave those states. Now that the enforcement provision of 1070 has been upheld by the SCOTUS and lifted by Judge Bolton, law enforcement in the 1070 states can begin enforcing the law which will cause even more illegal aliens to flee those states.

Romney's talking these days in very generalized terms about "a long-term solution" to immigration but without specifics. He and his RINO advisors are clearly afraid that Conservatives will find out "the Amnesty component" of his plan and say, "He ain't getting my vote!" Some sort of legalization or Amnesty will be pushed next year if he's elected--either the "touchback" scheme (which is unworkable and unenforceable) or a Reaganesque General Amnesty. He has stopped talking about illegal aliens having to self-deport. That was a ruse in January to get Conservatives to support him in the primaries and it worked; he's the nominee.

Neither Romney nor Indiana Republican Congressman Mike Pence (who developed "touchback") have ever detailed "how" Congress and the President would force 40 to 60 million illegals to return to Mexico, even to simply get their papers--the "guts" of the touchback plan. Many illegals wouldn't trust such a scheme; besides the cost of returning, they'd worry about getting stuck back in Mexico and wouldn't want to risk re-entering with things as dangerous as they are along the Border. It is a ridiculous, unworkable plan with "little Ellis Island" checkpoints along the Border which is a war zone. Sending millions of illegals into that zone who will then line up in the most dangerous area of Mexico (and one of the most dangerous areas in the world) to re-enter would require 50,000 to 100,000 U.S. troops to protect them on the U.S. side but would leave them virtually unprotected on the Mexico side. My sense is that illegals here would never accept such a scheme as they know the Cartel would want to rob, rape and even kill them if [the Cartel] can profit from it.

It is also unlikely that the American people would accept the President sending that many troops to the Border to protect the exiting illegals. Also, think of the mass of abandoned vehicles left on the U.S. side as illegals re-enter Mexico on foot; one would think that the millions of Mexicans would drive back into Mexico, but many of them would not, fearing the Cartel would steal their vehicles, etc. And what would the Mexican Government do? Would they offer protection to these 40 to 60 million of their returning countrymen or would they stay out of the war zone and let the Cartel operatives rob, rape and kill the returning illegals at will? The Mexican side of the Border area could be turned into "a massive killing field" and the U.S./Romney could to nothing about it! The blood of these murdered returning Mexicans following this hairbrained "touchback" scheme would be on President Romney's hands. That would be his legacy.

Question: Have Conservative Americans thought this thing out or are some of
them so desperate for ABO that they'll vote for the liberal flip-flopper Romney? Because if Romney is elected, something like "touchback" or a General Amnesty will probably pass Congress or Romney may do as Soetoro-Obama did and use an Executive Order to get it going. If you extrapolate, taking the best-case scenario and comparing it to the worst-case scenario imaginable, you'll see that there is no way that this touchback scheme can succeed.

There are in fact only three things that can be done with the millions of illegal aliens here in the U.S.:

1. legalize them (the easy way out favored by Romney and the RINOs controlling the GOP),

2. leave them alone (de facto Amnesty) or

3. arrest and deport them/force them to self-deport

"Touchback" would legalize them, a scheme meant to appease law and order Americans as it wouldn't look like Amnesty at first glance (as they'd have to return to Mexico for their papers), a scheme meant to create 40 to 60 million new LEGAL aliens who we can't afford to have anymore than we can the 40 to 60 million ILLEGAL ones.

If "touchback" is implemented, the net result would be the end of America as we've known it and speed up the move to Mexamerica. It would also mean the end of The Republican Party with 40 to 60 million legalized aliens who the Democrats will do everything they can to naturalize so that they can legally vote.

Some Republicans labor under the misconception that if a Republican President is leading this scheme, a good portion of these legalized aliens will supposedly vote Republican once they are naturalized. It's part of "The Rovian Fallacy" I've written and talked about for years which is essentially "Be nice to illegals and Latinos will begin voting Republican in large numbers". However, John "Mr. Amnesty" McCain--one of illegal aliens' best friends in the U.S. government--got only 31% of the Latino vote in 2008 (exit poll results). G.W. Bush got 39% in 2004 (exit poll results) and he barely won reelection (Ohio's 50,000 vote advantage) and probably would have lost had he had anyone but truly awful candidate in John Kerry as his opponent.

Consistent polling results indicate that by a 70% to 30% margin, Americans don't want to see 40 to 60 million Federal lawbreakers rewarded by legalization. We've been invaded and the Invaders must leave!

With President Romney, I fear a "touchback" or General Amnesty will be impossible to stop given the "honeymoon" the House and Senate Republicans would give him in his first year.

As I wrote in a recent column, with Soetoro-Obama as President, difficult as that would be to swallow for Conservatives, we'd have a better chance of stopping an Executive Order General Amnesty via Congress or the courts than we would a Romney Amnesty passed by a Republican Congress. In my opinion, a divided government--with Republicans controlling the purse strings--would be something to build on for the 2014 Midterms (where more concerted efforts by the base would weed out some of the RINOs).

Some Conservatives have tried to counter this by saying, "But Obama being reelected would mean two leftist appointments to replace leftist Bader-Ginsburg and ultra-liberal Stevens who will be retiring from the SCOTUS!" That argument is laid to rest with the fact that the net loss would be "zero"; The Supreme Court would remain 5-4 Conservative. Governor Romney's appointing mostly liberal and left-wing judges in MA (23 of 36 appointments) is certainly not indicative of a politician who Conservatives can trust with Federal judge or SCOTUS appointments.

To "touchback" or not to "touchback", that is the question Conservatives will be facing next year only I'm afraid that with President Romney, the question will have already been answered.
