Virginia Already Has A 1070 Enforcement Law On The Books? (my version of title by Bob Lewis at the AP)

When one reads this piece by Bob Lewis, one has to understand "where" he's coming from: He's a Political Writer for the AP. He calls illegal aliens "immigrants" and "the undocumented". He clearly hates 1070. He's on the wrong side of this important law and order issue. He'd like to see 1070 go away.

Here's what Lewis writes:

***********************************************************

Guess what: Virginia put a version of that law in place in 2008, two years before Arizona. It requires Virginia officers to check every person they arrest and take into custody to determine whether they are in the United States legally. Virginia long ago mandated checks on arrests and in many other circumstances, including admission to a state hospital, to obtain a driver's license, Medicaid benefits and, in some cases, employment.

***********************************************************

One major difference between the Virginia's law and 1070 (from what I can tell without seeing the VA law with only this statement by a left-wing writer for the AP) is this:

***********************************************************

1070 allows police and sheriffs deputies to ask for proof of immigration status when they have reasonable doubt about a suspect they pull over or stop on the sidewalk AND THEY CAN ASK FOR THAT PROOF WITHOUT ARRESTING THE SUSPECTS! Virginia's law only allows police and sheriff's deputies to do so AFTER they've arrested the individual and taken them into custody. Am I right? That's a major difference.

***********************************************************

And there's one other VERY IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE:

***********************************************************

1070 includes a restatement of LAWA--Arizona's super-tough mandatory E-verify law. It applies to ALL new hires and for ALL businesses in the Grand Canyon state. VIRGINIA HAS NO LAWA, NO MANDATORY E-VERIFY LAW so businesses can skate! They can get away with hiring illegals!

***********************************************************

It's an important comparison. All 1070 laws are different. Two of them are very similar to 1070. HB 56 (Alabama's 1070 law) has been weakened. South Carolina's SB 20 isn't as tough.

1070 is the toughest 1070 law in the land.

My thanks to americanpatrol.com for posting this.
